Living Vineyards

Restoring Ecosystems, Cultivating Terroir

Mission

Thriving ecosystems, above and below ground, could be the most powerful solution to buffer the effects of climate change.

Living Vineyards’ Mission is to empower winegrowers worldwide to become leaders in ecosystem restoration.

Through collaboration, innovation and education, we will prioritize ecological integrity to enhance biodiversity, soil health whilst producing exceptional wines.

Vision

Living VINEYARDS envisions a world where the art of winemaking harmonizes with the preservation and restoration of the natural environment, setting a new standard for responsible viticulture

Goals

  1. Align our community estates with the EU Nature Restoration Law and UN Decade on Restoration.
  2. Enhance and increase the natural capital of our members.
  3. Promote and root, beyond Porto Protocol’s network, the concept of ecosystems management.

A CALL
TO ACTION

CLIMATE RESILIENCE

  • Restoring ecosystems and adopting nature-based solutions in vineyards can contribute to carbon sequestration, contributing to the climate change mitigation.

GLOBAL COLLABORATION

  • The project’s global scope fosters collaboration among wineries, researchers, and environmental organizations, leading to the exchange of best practices and innovations.
  • Industry Standards: Successful implementation of the project may contribute to the establishment of industry-wide standards for responsible vineyard management.

WATER CONSERVATION

  • Practices like Dry-Farming, water-efficient irrigation and soil management contribute to water retention, especially in regions facing water scarcity.

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION:

  • The restoration of ecosystems can create habitats that support diverse plant and animal species, promoting biodiversity, contributing to broader efforts in wildlife conservation.
  • Increased biodiversity may lead to natural pest control, reducing the need for chemical interventions.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

  • The primary impact would be the ecosystem restoration surrounding and within vineyards. This includes improvements in soil health and its natural ability to sequester carbon, biodiversity, water quality, and overall ecosystem resilience.

LEADERSHIP

  • Wineries participating in the project showcase global leadership in environmental stewardship, setting an example for other industries to follow.

INDUSTRY TRANSFORMATION

  • Living Vineyards can catalyze a shift of paradigm in the wine industry towards more environmentally conscious practices.
Encourage the development of new technologies and innovations for a holistic viticulture.

SOIL HEALTH AND FERTILITY

  • Practices like cover cropping and organic fertilization, enhance soil structure and fertility.
  • Erosion control measures contribute to soil conservation.

KNOWLEDGE DISSEMINATION
