A passionate researcher and fifth-generation winemaker, Fernando leads a team of PhDs in conducting studies that continue to demonstrate the pioneer spirit that characterizes this century-old Catena Zapata family winery. Fernando joined the Catena Zapata family in 2005, after graduating with honors from Don Bosco School of Enology. He quickly became the Research & Development Director in 2007, given his devotion for quality and a meticulous attention to detail. As the Head Winemaker for Nicolás Catena Zapata and President of Bodegas CARO (joint venture Catena Zapata – Chateau Lafite-Rothschild), Fernando is committed to achieving excellent, memorable wines. Fernando has vast international winemaking experience, having worked in Italy and California, and holds a master’s degree in Viticulture and Enology with honors from University of California, Davis. While at UC Davis, Buscema participated in groundbreaking research about high-altitude viticulture and growing Malbec in various geographic areas around the globe. His work was published in numerous scientific magazines including American Journal of Enology & Viticulture and Food Chemistry.
